Welcome to Roots and Wings Connections! Our Administration Team will assist you throughout your wellness journey with us, from your initial introduction to our practice to any additional assistance you may require. We understand that embarking on a new journey can be exciting and overwhelming. We believe every person deserves a thoughtful and attentive experience, and our administration team is here to provide that experience.

Markie Barchick, Vice President of Billing & Finance Operations

Markie, our VP of Billing & Finance, is excited to assist you throughout your journey to healing. Markie enjoys helping others and seeing them succeed, and she is committed to providing support to both clients and counselors to help each individual reach their own goals. Her goal is to ensure that every client receives personalized and compassionate care, and she looks forward to being a part of your wellness journey. Markie manages the billing and finance department. She has a lovely sense of humor and genuinely cares for our personnel and clients. Outside of work, Markie loves spending time with her family and friends and enjoys watching streaming shows to unwind.

Brittany Sturm, Vice President of Clinical & Administrative Operations

Brittany was born and raised in Reno, Nevada, where she currently resides with her husband and two sons. From a young age, Brittany knew she wanted a career dedicated to helping people. She worked as a dental assistant for six years before deciding to become a stay-at-home mom shortly after the birth of her first son. Brittany loves motherhood and enjoys watching her two little boys grow and change each day. She feels blessed to be part of Roots and Wings Connections, where she continues pursuing her passion for helping others. In her free time, Brittany enjoys camping, dirt biking, baking, crocheting, and taking her sons on little adventures.

Lanie Scheier, Billing & Accounting Technician 

Lanie is the Billing and Accounting Technician, where she works closely with Markie, our VP of Operations, within the Billing Department. Thrilled to be a part of your journey toward healing, Lanie brings to the practice a genuine passion for assisting others and witnessing their triumphs in pursuing their passions. Her objective is to guarantee that each client receives not only personalized but also deeply compassionate attention,  and she is eagerly looking forward to accompanying you on your unique path to wellness.

Outside of work, Lanie finds immense joy in embracing her role as a dedicated mother, striving to provide the utmost support and care for her loved ones. During her leisure hours, she indulges in her love for art, immersing herself in the vibrant colors and creative expressions of various mediums. Lanie enjoys painting, and is very skilled in graphic design. She also enjoys movies, and immerses herself in the captivating worlds woven within the pages of literature.

Victoria Little, Administration, Client & Team Events Coordinator, Website Manager

Victoria is part of the administrative team at Roots and Wings. Victoria has spent most of her early life in Washington State and has a deep love for the Pacific Northwest. She enjoys spending time outdoors, hiking and mountain biking, and indulging in hobbies such as photography, writing, and reading.

Victoria's passion for caring for children led her to work as a preschool teacher and childcare provider for many years. Through her experience in working with children, she discovered her interest in Child Psychology and Development and decided to pursue her undergraduate education in Psychology through the Bachelor of Science program at Old Dominion University. She has also been gifted the opportunity to receive experience in various office settings. She is committed to providing thoughtful and attentive care to all of our clients and is excited to be a part of your wellness journey. When she graduates, she plans to pursue a Master’s in Counseling and a PhD in Child Psychology to further help those in need.

Trent Gunther, Administration, Intake Coordinator and Scheduling

Trent is a Virginia Beach native who has always enjoyed spending many years traveling the East Coast.  Trent has a B.S. in Psychology from Old Dominion University, and aims to focus on child psychology and development. His interest in this field has been deeply influenced by his family values and desire to make a positive impact on the lives of children. When not studying or working, Trent enjoys staying active and spending time in nature. Kayaking is one of his favorite activities, allowing him to explore Virginia's many waterways and soak up the sun. He also enjoys reading and binge-watching movies and shows to unwind. Trent is excited to take his next step into counseling and is eager to learn as much as possible from the experience. Trent spends most of his time in office working with our clients and clinicians during the process to initiating services and scheduling intake appointments.

Maggie McGinley, Administration, Records Custodian, Community Outreach & Engagement Specialist

Maggie was born and raised in Portsmouth and holds great fondness for her home in the Hampton Roads. She also aims to make an impact in the Hampton Roads community, especially in mental health. Since graduating with a B.S. in Psychology from William and Mary, Maggie has continued to support the health and wellbeing of her community, both in positions as clinical staff and as an administrative assistant. She is a wonderful addition to our practice and provides a welcoming atmosphere and accessible services.

After work hours, you'll find Maggie enjoying hobbies such as painting and wildlife photography in her neighborhood. Maggie also enjoys cooking and will prep elaborate meals without a recipe- sometimes with mixed results.  She also finds mindfulness in coloring pages and is always happy to share a page or two. Maggie is excited to assist you with any questions or concerns you have on your wellness journey.

Shona Dafoe, Administration

We’re thrilled to welcome Shona as the newest member of our admin team! Shona brings a wealth of experience and a caring heart to our group. She’s had a diverse career journey, working as a paralegal and as a nanny for children with special needs, showcasing her incredible dedication and adaptability. Now, she’s embarking on an exciting new chapter, pursuing a degree in Elementary Education.

Originally from Orlando, Shona has called three states home, giving her a broad perspective and a love for exploring new places. In her free time, she enjoys creating art, solving puzzles, and staying active at the gym. At home, Shona’s two lovable cats, Noodle and Cheese, are her constant companions, happily soaking up the sun and watching birds by the Elizabeth River while she enjoys a good book.

Abigail Brinson, Social Media & Marketing Intern

Abbi is a student at James Madison University, entering her second year of studies. She currently holds the position of Social Media and Marketing Intern at Roots and Wings Connections. In this role, Abbi is dedicated to connecting new clients to the practice and effectively communicating its services through her expertise in graphic design.

In addition to her academic and professional pursuits, Abbi has a passion for music and enjoys creating and immersing herself in nature through hiking. She also values spending time with her family. Her commitment to leveraging social media and marketing strategies ensures that potential clients are well-informed and engaged with the services provided by Roots and Wings.

Caleb Hebert, Administration

Meet Caleb, a 17-year-old senior balancing school, sports, and a part-time job at Roots and Wings. He plays football and lacrosse and is starting a podcast about Gen Z struggles like mental health, social pressures, and family relationships. Next year, he’s committed to playing lacrosse at Point Park University while studying electrical engineering. With his curiosity and drive to connect with others, Caleb is focused on making an impact and constantly pushing himself to improve.
