Michael was born and raised in the small town of Greenville, MS. After graduating from Mississippi College with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology, he worked in a variety of mental health settings with both adults and children including: a long-term wilderness therapeutic program for boys with emotional and behavioral issues, an acute psychiatric hospital setting with children and adults, and as an intensive in-home counselor working with children and families. He also worked as an investigator for Child Protective Services for 8 years where he was passionate about protecting and ensuring the safety of some of our community’s most vulnerable citizens while providing them with resources to function more effectively as family units. After leaving CPS, he earned his Master’s of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Old Dominion University. While at ODU, he completed practicum and internships at a community organization, providing intensive in-home counseling services again. In January of 2021 he decided to transition into outpatient counseling, in an effort to continue serving the community by helping to facilitate the change needed to heal and function more effectively in their daily lives. His approach to counseling is very strengths-based, solution-focused, and employs Cognitive Behavioral Therapy techniques as applicable and useful. He firmly believe in everyone’s ability to change and improve their lives if they are willing to make the effort and become fully involved in the counseling process. He prides himself on having a non-judgmental approach and in his ability to quickly engage clients and build rapport. He is particularly passionate about working with populations who struggle with anxiety, depression, self-esteem issues, impacts of trauma and mistreatment, substance abuse issues, and sexual identity issues. He is also an Eagle Scout and loves dogs!
Ava, Honorary Therapist
Welcome to Roots and Wings! If you have been in our secondary office, you may have seen Ava trotting around the office with her dad, Michael. She is a 13-year-old Maltipoo. Her dad brought her home from the SPCA at 3 months old. Ava is our honorary Therapist. She brings a calming atmosphere to sessions and is very intuitive to people’s feelings. She loves pets, and gentle rubs, but don’t pick her up please! Four on the floor is our rule in the office. Ava will usually hang out with her dad, Michael, her friend, Amy, and with the administrative team in both offices. If you see her, please ask the person she is with if you can pet her.
